Weekend Whatcha’ Playin’

It is time once again to ask the most important question to gamers when it comes to their hobby this weekend: Whatcha’ Playin’?

The last week has been a fantastic one in gaming seeing Resident Evil 2 Remake release, the long awaited Kingdom Hearts 3 arrive, and one of my most anticipated games of the year–Wargroove–releases today.

I’ll be jamming on two of those games this weekend.

Kingdom Hearts III

I was a massive fan of Kingdom Hearts I and II, but I fell off the series after a number of releases were scattered across a ton of different consoles. Kingdom Hearts III looked great to me, of course, but I had nearly a 200 hour hurdle to get caught back up with the series. Instead I spent a weekend watching recap videos and reading recap posts, and my excitement blew through the roof for the newest iteration. It was like I had never left the fandom, and suddenly the release was looming days away.

Was it worth the wait? Hard to say for a lot of people I imagine, and I’m only about 10 hours in, but I’ve had a goofy smile plastered on my face the entire time. I love Disney, I love Square Enix games (mostly), and I couldn’t be happier playing through this iteration. I just got to the Tangled world, and my daughter is absolutely ecstatic to see me continue this weekend.

Wargroove

I love Advance Wars. Sure, Fire Emblem is good stuff and I love me a good fantasy setting, but I’ve always preferred the gameplay of Advance Wars. Unfortunately Nintendo decided to not make anymore of them since Days of Ruin, but luckily Chucklefish is stepping up to save the day with Wargroove.

This is a fantasy inspired take on Advance Wars, with plenty of great ideas of its own to boot. It has a 20-30 hour campaign mode, a puzzle mode, arcade mode to flesh out the commanders story, and even a in depth level and campaign creator that allows you to share your creation across the webs.

This day at work is going to be absurdly long as I wait to play, especially since the game’s icon is taunting me as it is already pre-downloaded and I’m just waiting for internet access to unlock it.

Well, what are your plans for the weekend? Joining me on an over the top romp through Disney Worlds? Let me know in the comments below, and have a great weekend!

  1. Having a blast playing Quake Champions at the moment, and I’ll be playing quite a bit of that over the coming weekend. I’m surprised it took me so long to finally check it out, but its old-school shooter formula really appeals to me, as I used to play Quake 3 Arena quite a lot many years ago. It takes a while to get really good in Champions from what I can tell so far, but it’s still quite a lot of fun to play even when you’re being garbage at it. Looking to sharpen my game skills further this weekend, in a lead-up to writing my Early Access impressions of Quake Champions on my blog.

  2. Wargroove looks phenomenal! My weekend will be spent seriously, for real this time, finishing Mario and Rabbids. I’ve been playing it since the end of 2017 here and there. I absolutely love it, but it’s time to wrap it up and move along. Apart from that, I’m going to play some point and click adventures and hopefully find some new favorites for the genre.

    1. I think Mario and Rabbids was one of my favorite games of 2017, and that is saying something when we had Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and Horizon Zero Dawn. If you ever get a chance the DK add on content is utterly brilliant.

  3. I randomly started Black Flag last night, as I had it sitting unplayed in my library and really felt like some pirate action. We’ll see how long I keep with that. Otherwise, I’ve been playing a bit of Battlefield V with a shooter-obsessed friend who just bought a PS4, and those big battles have been quite fun.

I think I’ll eventually pick up Wargroove. I’ve been eyeing Kingdom Hearts, but I don’t remember much from II and only just heard there were other games, so I think I’d be quite lost. Catch-up videos are a good idea.

    1. I’ve been surprised how good a job that Kingdom Hearts 3 has done at catching me up, but yeah, recap videos are a great idea.

Let me know what you think of Black Flag. Outside of Odyssey and Brotherhood it is one of my favorite Assassin’s Creed games, irregardless of the narrative. The ship to ship combat is pretty stellar.
